چکیده
Objectives/Hypothesis: Chondrosarcoma is a rare malignancy of the head and neck with fewer than 600 cases described in the literature. Treatment typically consists of conservation surgery with preservation of airway and preoperative voice quality. We describe five patients treated with a conservative transcervical approach utilizing the operating microscope for submucosal microdissection. Study Design: Retrospective case series at a National Cancer Institute–designated comprehensive cancer center. Methods: A retrospective case series from February 2004 to February 2011 was performed for all consecutive patients with laryngeal chondrosarcoma treated by the senior author with transcervical submucosal microdissection utilizing the operating microscope. Results: Five patients with laryngeal chondrosarcoma were treated between February 2004 and February 2011. There were three male and two female patients who ranged in age from 56 to 87 years (mean, 72 years) at presentation. All five tumors were located at the level of the cricoid cartilage. Hoarseness was the most common presenting symptom (60%). Eighty percent of patients had limited vocal cord mobility. No patients required neck dissection or received radiation or chemotherapy. None of the five patients had recurrence after this approach. Conclusions: Laryngeal chondrosarcoma is a rare tumor. Conservative surgical resection remains the mainstay of treatment. The use of an operating microscope can aid in successful resection of laryngeal chondrosarcoma while preserving laryngeal mucosa and function.

Cutaneous metastases of laryngeal chondrosarcoma.
The following is the case of a 60-year-old male patient, a non-smoker, who was admitted to our unit with dyspnoea, dysphonia and a sore throat which had progressively evolved over several months. Fibroscopic examination showed a subglottic ulcer, which was biopsied and identified as a grade 2 laryngeal chondrosarcoma. A cervical CT scan revealed a subglottic lesion which had spread into the pre...

Laryngeal chondrosarcoma is a rare mesenchymal tumor, most frequently affecting cricoid cartilage. The objective of this report is to present successful video laryngoscope usage in a patient with anticipated difficult airway who refused awake fiberoptic endotracheal intubation (AFOI). A 59-year-old male patient was admitted in our hospital due to difficulty breathing and swallowing. On clinical...
متن کاملLaryngeal Chondrosarcoma as a Rare Cause of Subglottic Stenosis
Laryngeal chondrosarcoma (CS) is a very rare entity. It is usually seen in 50-80-year olds. It is developed from cricoid cartilage largely. Patients have laryngeal CS complaint of respiratuvar distress, dysphonia, and dysphagia generally. A submucous mass is usually seen in physical examination with an intact mucosa. Distant metastasis is rare in CSs. Main treatment is surgical excision. An 82-...

Primary chondroid tumors of the larynx represent less than 1% of all laryngeal tumors. Most of them are chondromas and they often involve to the cricoid cartilage. Microlaryngoscopy revealed 2 cm sized, ill-defined, covered with regular mucosa, porous, and hard mass on posterior surface of...
متن کاملDistance between Anterior Commissure and the First Tracheal Ring: An Important New Clinical Laryngotracheal Measurement
Introduction: The distance between the anterior commissure of the larynx and the first tracheal ring (AC.T. distance) is of great importance in laryngotracheal surgeries. The amount of narrowing of the subglottic airway is used as a quantitative mean to determine whether the lesion is subglottic or has extended to the trachea and therefore helps in the prediction of the final prognosis.
